Irrigation/ Watering Restriction
June 1- September 15
Outdoors, Americans use nearly 9 billion gallons daily on lawns and landscaping. Home lawns and landscaping are often over-watered. In Minnesota, most outdoor water use occurs during the hotter summer months. Excessive watering can strain water resources. There are ways to reduce consumption while retaining an attractive landscape.
Irrigation Timing:
Daily water application is unnecessary for healthy established turf. Before watering, verify that the grass needs watering:
- Step on the grass.
- Do not water if the grass springs back.
- Water if the grass stays flattened.
- Water landscapes and lawns during the early morning when it is still cool.
- Lawns need about 1 inch of rain or water per week. Deep soaking is better for roots than frequent shallow watering.
- Water your lawn infrequently, one time or less per week, assuming no rainfall has occurred.
- Cut grass to 3 to 4 inches.
The schedule for residents and businesses restricts sprinkling based on the last digit of the street address:
- Even number addresses may water on even-number days
- Odd number addresses may water on odd-number days
- Homeowner Associations follow the odd-even sprinkling schedule or set to control 50%.
EXCEPTIONS: Newly seeded/sod areas and new trees/shrubs may be watered daily.
The City will leave a note on your door reminding you of the sprinkling ban the first time. Further violations will result in a $50 fine.
